The DD60s predicted for the 5 days following planting at Rocky Mount are included in the table below. We have very good planting conditions from May 10th through the 13th, with planting conditions declining after that. The marginal conditions for the 15th are not too alarming, because the first few days of the 5 days following planting are warm. The first two days following planting are most critical because the seedling is most susceptible to chilling injury during this period. In general, I would rather plant in marginal conditions with temperature declining during the five days following planting than with them increasing. I often think of this situation as the DD50’s after planting are front loaded rather than back loaded.
We will keep an eye open for any changes to the forecast for the days following the 15th. If it stays as predicted I don’t see any reason to stop planting as the lowest temperature predicted at this time is 53 on the 17th. I would recommend that growers pay attention to cool germ values during this time.
