Bollworms have not caused many problems in newer cotton varieties that produce the Vip3A toxin. Fortunately, these varieties continue to provide strong protection. However, growers should remain alert because bollworm pressure has been unusually high this year.
In June 2026, we captured about three times as many bollworm moths as we did in June 2025. Light-trap catches also show that the major bollworm flight is now underway across much of North Carolina.
With this many moths moving into the system, some cotton fields may need to be treated for bollworm this year. However, growers should make treatment decisions by scouting each field, not by relying only on regional moth catches.
The treatment threshold is 4% damaged bolls. This threshold is supported by extensive research. Do not spray based only on the number of eggs.
