Cotton Planting conditions May 2, 2026

(Updated: May 2, 2026, 12:26 p.m.)

The soil temperature at 8 am this morning ranged from low to mid 60's, not terrible, but certainly not ideal. Note that today and Sunday there is no DD60 accumulation predicted and therefore planting should probably be delayed until Monday. Most areas are getting some rain today, thankfully, which will likely prohibit planting today and tomorrow. We should be in good shape for planting beginning on Monday.

The conditions look pretty good next week with the exception of low temperatures on Thursday. This is related to the rain that is supposed to come in on Thursday. However, it should be a relatively short cool spell (2-3 days), with decent temperatures following.

Growers should check the cotton planting conditions calculator for more local predictions and any changes to the forecast in the next week. https://products.climate.ncsu.edu/ag/cotton-planting/
