If there is anything we can count on weather-wise in North Carolina, it is the Indian summer that usually occurs in the second week of October. After a cool start to October we have a warm spell predicted from today, October 10, through Saturday October 14 with temperatures in the mid to high 70’s and lows in the 50’s. After Saturday we start seeing highs in the 60’s and lows in the low to mid 40’s. Defoliants work best with warmer temperatures and sunny weather. This is particularly true with Finish or Prep type boll openers.
In many years a warm spell like this in October is our last chance to have decent conditions for defoliation and boll opening before the risk of frost occurs. Even without considering the potential for frost, we are not likely to have the temperatures to contribute to increased boll maturation after the middle of October. With these considerations, the least risky thing to do now is to take advantage of this weather and get the crop open and ready to harvest. Below are the predicted temperatures for Rocky Mount
