The planting conditions look favorable for the rest of this week and excellent for next week.

We advise you use the Cotton Planting Conditions Calculator  (https://products.climate.ncsu.edu/ag/cotton-planting/) to find local information for you area. We recommend you check this often as condition change.

The longer term NOAH forecast from May 15 to 21 is leaning toward above normal temperatures. Precipitation during this period is predicted to lean below normal to normal.

We seem to be in the clear on temperatures. The question now is how to deal with rain. It is only May 8th, and therefore we are nowhere near “late” yet, if we want to hold off a few days until we see how much rainfall we receive. Naturally, folks dont want to replant due to packing or saturating rains, and those added costs need to be considered in this year especially. However, we cant wait indefinitely. Forecasts include decent chances of rain for several days next week. In another week, we might find ourselves in a situation where we need to go ahead and plant in order to get the crop in the ground before crop insurance deadline, depending on how much has already been planted and how much remains to be planted. Holding off a day or two now isnt a problem, but keep the longer term forecast, and acres remaining to be planted, in mind.
